TSUYOSHI MONDA: THE MAKING OF A CHAMPION

From Simba Rugby Academy to African Rugby Glory . A Story of Growth, Determination and High Performance

Greatness is not built in a single match. It is developed over years of dedication, opportunity, learning and the courage to pursue something bigger. For Kenyan rugby talent Tsuyoshi Monda, that journey has taken him from the grassroots training environment of Simba Rugby Academy to the continental stage with Kenya's Under-20 national team.

On 11 August 2026, Kenya's Under-20 rugby team, popularly known as Chipu, celebrated a historic victory in Kampala, Uganda. A commanding 33–14 triumph over Namibia secured Kenya's record fourth Rugby Africa U20 Barthés Trophy.

Among the young athletes named in Kenya's championship squad was Tsuyoshi Monda.

It was a remarkable milestone in a journey that had begun years earlier, long before the national recognition, international exposure and championship celebrations.

But to understand Monda's progress, one must look beyond the trophy.

His story is about the development of a young rugby player who embraced opportunities to grow — physically, technically, academically and personally.

Where the Journey Began

Long before appearing on the continental stage, Monda was developing his rugby foundations through Simba Rugby Academy, a Kenyan high-performance rugby development institution committed to nurturing young athletes.

His development journey can be traced back to Under-13 rugby, where the emphasis was on learning the game, developing fundamental skills and establishing the foundations for long-term athletic growth.

At this stage, success was not defined by international selection or championship medals. It was about learning, building confidence, understanding the demands of rugby and developing the discipline required to progress.

Through the academy's development environment, Monda was exposed to a philosophy that looks beyond immediate results. Technical coaching, strength and conditioning, mentorship, education and holistic development are central to preparing young athletes for the increasingly demanding levels of competitive sport.

His journey demonstrates the importance of allowing talent to develop progressively rather than expecting immediate success.

The young player taking his first steps through age-grade rugby was gradually building the foundation for something much greater.

A Breakthrough at Just 16

A significant moment arrived in September 2024.

At just 16 years old, Monda earned selection among the 60 players identified for Kenya's Under-18 rugby development squad following a nationwide talent identification process.

Representing St. Christopher's School and listed in the hooker position, he was among a select group of young players recognised through a highly competitive national pathway.

The selection process had involved hundreds of young rugby players from across Kenya, making inclusion in the final 60-player group an important achievement.

For Monda, it represented more than national recognition.

It was evidence that the technical development, consistent training and commitment he had demonstrated throughout his formative rugby years were creating opportunities at higher levels.

His progression from youth academy rugby into the national age-grade structure reflected the transition every ambitious young athlete hopes to make: from developing potential to competing for opportunities among the country's emerging talent.

Taking His Development Beyond Kenya

Monda's rugby journey would also take him beyond the borders of Kenya.

Through a sports scholar pathway, he continued his education and rugby development at Culford School in England, where he was exposed to another competitive sporting environment.

His experience included involvement in the school's First XV rugby programme and the Eastern Counties age-grade rugby pathway.

At Culford, his rugby achievements included recognition through Players' Player of the Season awards and a Coaches' Player of the Season award, reflecting the progress and contribution recorded during his time in the school programme.

Competing within a different rugby environment offered further opportunities to refine his technical understanding, physical preparation, decision-making and adaptability.

Exposure to different coaching approaches and competitive structures is an important element of high-performance athlete development.

For Monda, the journey was not simply about moving from one country to another. It was about continuing to learn, embracing new standards and expanding his experience as a developing rugby player.

Every training session, competitive fixture and learning opportunity became another part of his progression.

More Than an Athlete

Perhaps one of the most inspiring dimensions of Monda's journey is that his development has never been limited to rugby alone.

Beyond the field, he has pursued academic interests in physics, engineering and aviation.

His educational activities have included research into aircraft design, practical exposure to aviation maintenance and participation in student leadership and peer mentorship programmes.

These interests reveal another side of his personal development: a young person pursuing sporting excellence while also preparing for opportunities beyond competitive rugby.

It is a powerful reminder that high performance should not be measured exclusively through physical ability or sporting achievements.

The qualities developed through sport discipline, accountability, communication, resilience and continuous learning can also contribute to success in education, leadership and professional life.

Monda's journey reflects that broader understanding of achievement.

He is developing not only as a rugby player, but as a young person preparing for a future with multiple possibilities.

From National Recognition to African Champion

In August 2026, another important chapter unfolded.

Monda was selected for Kenya's Under-20 national rugby squad competing in the Rugby Africa U20 Barthés Trophy in Uganda.

He was named among Kenya's replacements for the crucial encounters against Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The Kenyan side opened its championship campaign with a 35–23 victory over Zimbabwe, setting up a final against defending champions Namibia.

On 11 August, Kenya rose to the occasion, defeating Namibia 33–14 and claiming a historic fourth continental title.

For Monda, being part of that championship squad represented a defining milestone in his development.

The player whose journey had begun in junior academy rugby had progressed into a national Under-20 programme competing at the highest continental level of African age-grade rugby.

Yet the significance of this achievement extends beyond the result.

His progression illustrates how long-term investment in coaching, structured athlete development, educational opportunity and competitive exposure can help prepare young talent for higher levels of performance.

The journey from U13 rugby to a continental championship squad does not happen through talent alone.

It requires sustained effort, a willingness to learn, consistent preparation and the support of people and institutions committed to athlete development.

A Journey That Inspires the Next Generation

Through its partnership with Simba Rugby Academy, Alkebulan Simba E.U Pro recognises the value of development journeys such as Monda's.

The shared commitment to youth empowerment, structured growth, education and high-performance excellence reflects a belief that meaningful sporting achievement begins long before an athlete reaches the international stage.

Monda's experience shows what becomes possible when young athletes have opportunities to develop their abilities while also strengthening their character, academic interests and personal ambitions.

His story is not simply about producing better rugby players.

It is about recognising the potential of young people and supporting pathways that allow that potential to flourish.

For younger athletes training today, Monda represents an encouraging example of progression through commitment and opportunity.

His journey demonstrates that an athlete's starting point does not have to define the limits of their ambition.

The Journey Continues

At this stage of his career, Tsuyoshi Monda's story remains one of potential still being realised.

From his early years at Simba Rugby Academy to recognition within Kenya's Under-18 development structure, rugby scholarship opportunities in England and inclusion in an African championship-winning Under-20 squad, his progression is a testament to years of growth and development.

The next challenge will be to continue building on that foundation, raising his standards and pursuing further opportunities in rugby, education and life.

For Monda, the African title is an important milestone, but it does not have to be the final destination.

There are more lessons to learn, more challenges to embrace and new levels of performance to pursue.

Because the true measure of a developing champion is not simply how far they have come, but their determination to keep growing.

Tsuyoshi Monda's journey is still being written. And the next chapter promises to be just as important as the last.
